I use primarily Word 2016 for Mac and not the other apps in the Office suite, but Word 2016 for Mac is unusable--it crashes after ca. 1 minute after launching no matter the context, no matter the activity. I have been using Word 2016 for Mac since it was in beta, and it's never had this level of instability. Dec 3, 2017 - I regularly receive Error messages in relation to 'normal.dotm' when closing the programme. Mac/Apple: normal.dotm - Word cannot open the global template. Did this solve your problem?

By Sometimes the evil lurks in what’s supposed to be Word 2016’s main repository of sanity: the Normal template file. To fix the Normal template, you must delete it (or rename it) and then Word automatically builds a new, proper Normal template. If you rebuild the Normal template, you’re removing any customizations you’ve added, macros you’ve created, or default settings you’ve modified. On the other hand, those changes may be causing your problem, so it’s time for a fix.
