I was thinking that it could be client related, but that makes no difference at all. The previous virus scan indicated no viruses on the server either, but I'm running another tonight to be on the safe side (Kaspersky). I'd be most grateful for any advice!

Hi, I have experienced the same issue just yesterday. My customer has a server running Server 2008R1. It has been installed for almost 2 years. They have password protected spreadsheets that they generate and use on a monthly basis.
Yesterday they were unable to open the spreadsheet files off the server. The clients are using Office 2003. They were receiving an access denied message at the client. They were not getting the Excel password dialog. Working on the server, I was able to move or rename the file, but could not copy the file. Other spreadsheets in the same folder that do not have password protection work fine (can be opened, moved and copied). I don't believe that the problem is caused by Excel 2003, as all the previous months spreadsheets exhibit the same problem, and these have not been touched (These spreadsheets are generated monthly and go back for 8 years) The temporary solution was to retrieve the spreadsheet from the previous nights backup directly to a client. It could be an Antivirus issue (Using Bit Defender) but the backup server is Server 2003 has the same Bit Defender antivirus installed. Extracting the backups of the spreadsheets onto this server an they open fine an produe the Excel password dialog. If somebody has any clues, this would be appreciated. Regards Gavin Daniels.
