I certainly want to keep them, but all in one location would be best. OneNote doesn’t export so it looked like Copy/Paste was my only option and a terrible one at that. But after digging a bit deeper, I find a rather acceptable solution, and with a program I was already using. Notebooks for iPad is an app I’ve been using on the iPad for a couple of years now. It’s excellent and now there are Windows and Mac versions, which I purchased during their Thanksgiving sale. The Notebooks desktop version works like OneNote in that you can make a folder structure and make each note a separate file so they are easily transferred around.
The other useful piece to Notebooks is that each note gets a filename of whatever you type as the first line of text. It then saves the file automatically. No need to go through the manual save process and typing in titles. Quite a bit more efficient. With this in mind, it’s very easy to copy notes into Notebooks. With both apps open, right click and Copy a OneNote tab. Only select one tab at a time.
Switch over to Notebooks and make a new note by either File – New Note or Ctrl-N. Click into the new note and Paste – Ctrl-V the clipboard contents.
A new note will be created with the name of the OneNote tab as the filename. It’s a little slow and tedious, but it works incredibly well and is much faster than selecting all the text, copy it over, saving and entering in a filename. I found this to be much more efficient and gave me a simple way to save each note as a TXT file and recreate the hierarchy of my notes. Now that OneNote has been exported to TXT file it’s an easy matter to get it into Scrivener. You can either Import all the TXT files into their appropriate Scrivener folders, or with both apps open, select the Notes within Notebooks and drag them into the correct folder in Scrivener. The import process will be kicked off and the notes will now appear as part of the Scrivener Project.

This is by no means perfect, and there might be better ways, but it works pretty well. This method saves time since you don’t have to manually save each time a new note is created and the new text file will match the OneNote title. And since everything is in text format, it can easily be synched over to Notebooks for iPad so you can edit and work on notes over there. It’s also a good time to make a backup since all your notes are in TXT files. Yes, this is a two step process and there is the purchase of an additional application. However, Notebooks is a good tool in it’s own right and as I’ll get to in another article, you’ll get a lot of milage out of it when using an iPad and it integrates with Scrivener quite well.
